Campbell, Calif. (KGO) — One man was shot and several suspects remain at large after an armed robbery and shooting Wednesday near the San Jose Camera and Video on South Winchester Boulevard in Campbell.

Campbell Police say the incident happened just before 11 a.m

Camera cases, tools and evidence were strewn outside the family store. The area around the camera shop turned into a crime scene for most of the day.

Cathy Martinek was at work nearby and heard a quick pop – what she initially thought were Lunar New Year firecrackers.

“I just found out there’s a shooting going on right here,” he said, gesturing toward the camera shop. “A few meters from our building.

Martinek recalled hearing up to five shots. Campbell PD confirmed one person was shot and taken to a local hospital.

Broadcastify’s scanner audio alerted, “Shot in the gut.”

Police did not say whether the victim was an employee or a customer, and did not release details on his condition.

Police dogs were at the scene Wednesday afternoon, and parked cars showed bullet holes and broken windows.

Martinek says the whole thing took a few seconds after he heard the gunshots.

“It’s like one of the San Jose camera crews on the phone and looks frantic and scared,” Martinek described. “Then I saw two cars take off really fast.”

He did not know if the vehicles that left the scene were carrying the suspects or worried customers who fled the shooting.

Campbell police said several suspects are at large. ABC7 News’ coverage of the crime is very similar to others in the Bay Area.

In November, an estimated $180,000 worth of merchandise was stolen from a camera store near San Francisco’s Union Square. Surveillance of the area showed four people getting out of a gray sedan near Bush and Grant streets.

Earlier this month, there was another robbery at a high-end camera store in Pleasant Hill. A group of suspects also participated in the incident.

Campbell PD said it’s too early to speculate if Wednesday’s robbery is connected or part of a growing crime trend.

A customer at the indoor camera store told ABC7 News, “It’s scary! That is, they are aimed at people who come here and buy things. They live here and look after all the customers.”

While the owners declined to comment, they issued a note warning customers about the armed robbery. They wrote that they will not reopen until January 30 for the mental health of the employees.
