Turkey’s Disaster and Emergencies Agency (AFAD) estimated the earthquake near the southern city of Kahramanmaras at a magnitude of 7.4.

At least 53 people were killed after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey on Monday morning at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the German Center for Geoscientific Research (GFZ). Meanwhile, 42 people died in neighboring Syria and a tsunami warning was issued in Italy.

According to information agency AFP, Governor Erdinç Yilmaz said that 34 buildings were destroyed in the province. Firefighters and rescuers reached the areas where the buildings collapsed. They started a search and rescue operation to save those trapped under the rubble

According to footage shown by TRT public television, buildings were damaged and people gathered on snow-covered streets. According to reports, near Kahramanmarash region in the south of Turkey, a gas pipeline burst and the fire was burning uncontrollably. Now emergency services in the region are rescuing people from under the rubble.

According to a Reuters witness, the earthquake lasted for about a minute and windows were broken.
