A judge has banned common semi-automatic rifles in Illinois

On Friday, Effingham County District Judge Joshua Morrison issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) ending Illinois’ ban on semi-automatic rifles.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) signed the ban into law on January 10, 2023, Breitbart News reported. The new law allows people with prohibited firearms to keep them, but requires owners to register the weapons with the Illinois State Police.

Pritzker’s office released a statement as he signed the bill into law. It reads in part: “The new law also requires current owners of semi-automatic rifles to ensure that law enforcement knows the location of these weapons of war and who is responsible if they are dropped. in the wrong hands.”

FOX News noted that Judge Morrison issued the TRO on Friday in a case brought by “citizens of 87 counties in the State of Illinois.”

Morrison noted that the right to bear arms is protected by the US Constitution and the Illinois Constitution.

It found that the 830 plaintiffs from 87 counties “are denied their basic right to bear arms and suffer an immediate and irreparable injustice every day.”

On January 15, 2023, Breitbart News reported that sheriffs in 80 of Illinois’ 102 counties believed the ban was unconstitutional and refused to enforce it.

On January 20, 2023 The Wall Street Journal “Nearly every sheriff in Illinois has vowed not to enforce the new ban on military-style semiautomatic weapons,” he explained.
