Business travel is up but still below pre-covid

The business trip are still 12.5% below pre-covid levels, with some 10 million trips in the first half of the year (11.4 million in that period of 2019), in a segment that lags somewhat further behind than the rest due to new work habits and the proliferation of online meetings.

With the figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on tourism of residents and inflows of international tourists, in the first half of 2022 (the last closed period for which there are figures for both indicators) a total of 10 million business tripscompared to 11.4 million three years earlier.

However, in the first half of this year it almost exceeds the figures for all of 2020, the worst year in the history of tourism and travel, when barely 10.7 million movements were recorded for professional reasons (9.4 million nationals and 1.3 million international entries).

Before the pandemic, in 2019, more than doubled had been made: 21.53 million work trips, of which 16.12 million corresponded to national citizens and 5.41 million more, to foreigners who came to Spain for business or professional matters. In 2021 the numbers were somewhat better, but still very marked by the successive waves of the coronavirus, in such a way that they were counted 14.44 million trips for work reasonsof which 12.3 were national and the remaining 2.1, international.

94% of work trips are national

With data from closed years, in 2021 the 12.3 million national travelers who traveled for professional reasons stayed in Spain the vast majority (11.57 million, 94%), while the remaining almost 800,000 went abroad, especially to Europe (716,000).

In 2019, 16.1 million people residing in Spain had moved for these reasons, especially in the interior of the country (13.9 million) while abroad there were 2.16 million (1.77 to the rest of Europe). The worst year was 2020, with 9.3 million trips by nationals, of which 8.8 were made within the country and just over half a million to other countries (a quarter of the previous year).

They specifically traveled to congresses and fairs 524,000 people in 2021, barely a third of the 1.46 million two years earlier, in the absence of the covid virus. Business trips represent around 10% of all trips made by nationals, although the rate has risen somewhat from the first half of 2019 (9.3%) to the same period this year (10.3%) .

The most dynamic spending

In terms of spending, in 2019 this type of movement totaled 12,739 million euros if both the movements of nationals (6,700 million euros) and those of foreigners who came for business (6,050 million) are taken into account. The figures for 2020 are poorer: a third was consigned, 4,386 million euros, with almost 3,000 million left by Spaniards on their business trips within the country and barely 1,400 million from international ones.

Last year, 2021, the numbers went up but were still far from pre-covid levels, since total spending stood at 6,500 million (4,260 million for nationals and 2,250 for residents abroad). In the first half of this year the rate of growth is very significant: the Spanish left in these professional trips 3,600 million euros and, if it continues at this rate, the pre-covid volume will be close to the end of the year.
