Bristol Rovers recovered from an early setback to win 2-1 at Cambridge.

Sam Smith gave the home side the lead inside five minutes with a fine finish into the far corner following a superb cross from Harvey Knibbs.

Smith was disallowed moments later but James Belshaw headed over the bar from Ben Warman’s corner.

The keeper saved his first effort in the 22nd minute when Josh Coburn pounced on Aaron Collins’ cross and beat Will Mannion at the second attempt.

They then took the lead seven minutes later when Luca Hulda had plenty of room to cross for Scott Sinclair to fire home.

Looking to fight back, Smith went close again for Cambridge in the 63rd minute when he grabbed James Brophy’s cross.

The home side pushed forward in the closing stages but were unable to equalise, leaving Mark Bonner’s side one point above the relegation zone after suffering a third straight defeat.
