Champions League winner could replace Steve Bruce at West Brom

Premier League and Champions League winner Michael Carrick is one of the frontrunners to take over from the sacked Steve Bruce at Championship strugglers West Brom, according to the Northern Echo.

A quick look at West Bromwich Albion’s recent history of managerial appointments hardly paints a picture of a club with a plan.

From the experienced Alan Pardew to the complete opposite end of the spectrum in Darren Moore. From Slaven Bilic’s possession football up front to Sam Allardyce’s bank-against-the-wall reactionism. Bright young thing Valerien Ismael on oldtimer Steve Bruce’s EFL.

Now, in yet another whiplash-risking U-turn, the Northern Echo believe The Baggies could turn from Bruce (61, with 11 different clubs on his CV) to a man 20 years his junior. A man who had never managed a club at senior level before.

Both West Brom and Middlesbrough are keen on Michael Carrick

Manchester United legend Carrick is reportedly high on West Brom’s radar. The former England international wants to follow the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard into management. He appeared to have been bitten by the managerial bug during his short spell in charge of the Red Devils following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

The complication for West Brom is that Carrick has admirers elsewhere in the second tier. He is the “leading candidate” for the Middlesbrough job. Fellow Boro men have held preliminary talks with Carrick’s camp, the Echo adds.

The Mirror reports that West Brom are also considering three managers with a proven track record in the second tier. Former Huddersfield Town boss Carlos Corberan is one of them. Against all odds, he led an unpopular Terriers side to the play-off final last term.

Another on the radar is former Burnley manager Sean Dyche. Like Gary Rowett; the man at the helm of the Millwall side who so often confounds pre-season predictions.
