In recent years, members of five different African national teams have been given the chance to take part in the World Cup and it is believed that this number will continue to rise in the coming years. But this was not always the case and in the past there were only a very small number of African teams that could compete. In addition, several African teams had not yet achieved their independence at the time and were therefore unable to compete. When was the first African country to participate in the world’s most prestigious football tournament and which tournament was it?

When Egypt participated in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 1934, it was the first time that any African team had participated in the tournament. The competition at the time began with the knockout stages, and Hungary earned a place in the round of 16 with a 4–2 victory over Egypt.

Morocco was the second African nation to compete in the FIFA World Cup, held in 1970. Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was the third African nation to compete in 1974.
