Congressman died of heart attack during Bharat Jodo Yatra

Congressman Santoh Singh Chaudhary died of a heart attack during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Punjab this morning. He was 76 years old.

Jalandhar MP Santoh Singh Chaudhary collapsed while taking out a rally in Phillaur, Punjab. He was taken by ambulance to Phagwara Hospital where he later died.

Rahul Gandhi also rushed to the hospital where the veteran Congress leader was taken, the party leader said. The yatra has been suspended for the time being.

The Punjab leg of the Congress mega walk began on Wednesday from Fatehgarh Sahib.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Mr Chaudhary’s death was a “blow to the party and the organisation”.

“Deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely demise of our MP Shri Santoh Singh Chaudhary. His loss is a heavy blow to the party and the organization. My heart goes out to his family, friends and followers in this dark hour. . may his soul rest in heaven,” he tweeted.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “Santoh Singh Chaudhary, 76, Congress MLA from Jalandhar died of a sudden heart attack this morning during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. We share our condolences to the family. There will be some changes in the yatra schedule which will be shared soon.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also expressed condolences.
