How Deacon Phillippe was cast in Never Am Never

There are a few new additions to the cast of Never Have I Ever in season 3, but none arguably more valuable than Deacon Phillippe, son of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe.

As reported by Variety , showrunner Mindy Kaling revealed that she “cast Phillippe after her close friend Witherspoon told her he was interested in acting.”

“We were taking a break from the season and there was a role that seemed like it would be perfect for Deacon. He’s obviously so talented and great looking and we thought he was going to be great and he was excited to do it. He’s just such a well-behaved kid. He’s so talented, he’s so funny, and he fits the cast perfectly. The cast and crew loved him and it was special to have him.” – Mindy Kaling, via Variety.

Kaling commented, “He’s such a humble kid and he just wants to learn and he was raised by two very successful actors. [so] he’s not alert or anything.” adding, “He just came in with this open mind and was excited.”

Fellow showrunner Lang Fisher also admitted that she was instantly impressed by the young actor after his first table read.

“He was great and we were like ‘Come on board!’ It’s the first thing he’s ever done, but he was such a pro. He was simply raised to be a wonderful young man. He came on set really prepared and did a great job.” – Lang Fisher, via Variety.

Deacon’s father, Ryan Phillippe, reacted to his son’s big break in the third season of Never Have I Ever by telling Extra TV: “It’s really exciting. Being a parent is so rewarding to see him at this point in his life where he’s about to start his music career and do a little bit of acting and go to college. It’s really a lot of fun.”

Kaling hints that she wants Ava Phillippe to join another project

In an interview with Extra TV, Kaling would share how she would like to work with Deacon’s sister Ava Phillippe on an upcoming project.

While talking about the experience of working with Deacon, Kaling: “He’s so funny, so talented… He’s obviously, like, very handsome, and we had a great time with him on set, and he’s like his mom, where after he wrapped , he sent me a handwritten note thanking me for being on set…”

“You could say Reese is his mom… You’re just like, ‘Oh, you’re a good person… I can’t imagine anyone saying anything bad about you… You’re one of them.’ – Mindy. Kaling, via Extra TV.

The showrunner then added that “He and his sister are like that… So it was great to have him on set and he was really cute.”

Curious for comment, Extra TV’s Katie Krause would ask, “You mentioned his sister, so I’m just curious. You put him in ‘I’ve never been.’ Could you put Ava in ‘Legally Blonde 3’?”

Kaling responded in his usual manner [deserved] bravado: “Listen, I think I can do anything, and if it’s something she wanted to do, what a joy to have her in it.”

Keep your fingers crossed that we see the Kaling-Phillippe pairing back on screen in a future project.
