A 44-year-old suspected child trafficker, Maureen Wechinwu, who claims to be Reverend Sister, has confessed to “buying” children for N50,000 each.

Maureen Wechinwu was arrested by the police at her residence in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area of ​​Rivers State and 15 children were rescued from her home.

The state Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, revealed that the children rescued from the suspected human trafficker were between the ages of seven and nine, adding that the suspect would be prosecuted after investigations were completed.

Eboka said preliminary investigations showed that the children were picked from different parts of the South-South states and that we are sold out.

He said it took more than 24 hours before the children were able to report their experiences to police, adding that they were tortured and possibly hypnotized.

He said: “On September 3, personnel of the 50mindstion Restore Peace Command, acting on credible information about a child trafficker hideout, raided Omuigwe Abuja Phase II, Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, where a lady who claimed to be a Reverend was. Maureen Wechinwu, aged 44, was arrested.

“15 children were rescued, the case was handed over to the CP monitoring unit for discreet investigation.


“Investigations revealed the following facts: Prosper Godwin (m) was abducted at Ikpazasia market in Bayelsa State on 31/10/2020 together with two others whose whereabouts are unknown and was taken to the suspect.

“He (Prosper) was later sold to a woman in Lagos and subsequently returned to the suspect.

“The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Godwin Ododor, have been contacted and confirmed the child’s statement.

“Queen Harry (f) was abducted at Ojukwu at Mile 1, Diobu, Port Harcourt at about 7pm while on errands with her elder sister.

“The mother, Mrs. Florence, was contacted and confirmed the facts.

“Miracle John Ohiri (f) was abducted on 19/11/2021 at Ada-George Road, Port Harcourt, opposite Holy Rock Church, together with her mother and two siblings who have not been seen till date.

“The father John Ohiri was contacted to identify the child who corroborated her statement that he reported the incident to the Rumuokpakani Police Station.

“Favour Edeze (f) was abducted at Creek Road Market Port Harcourt on 29/04/2022 at about 10:00am while on errands.

“The father, one Emeka Edeze, was contacted and identified his child and also confirmed the incident.

“Chimele Obinna (female) was abducted on 24/04/2022 at Rumuodara/Culvet Oroigwe, Port Harcourt while sitting with her sister outside their house.

“Glory Obinna’s mother was contacted and said the incident was reported to the Okporo Police Station.

Eboka said that five parents had come forward and identified their children and that the police had yet to locate the parents of the remaining, urging parents who had lost their children to visit the headquarters.

Maureen said: “I run an orphanage with crazy people’s children. Fransisca Onyinyechi, who was given birth by a mad woman at Ogbogoro Community Market, is one of them.

“I can’t say I’m a venerable sister now that I’m a disgrace. But I believe I was before.

“I am of the Missionary Sisters of the Lady of Victory. It is in England, a foreign congregation. I am the only Nigerian in it.

“Some children are the children of madmen. One Mr. Victor brings me the others.

“Sometimes he comes with them in twos. One Miss Alice brought me two. Alice said since I was a beginner I should take them.

“Sometimes when Victor brings the kids, he’ll want money. But because of the pressure on me sometimes I will give N50,000, N60,000 and N100,000.

The mothers of the victims are speaking

Two women, who had already identified their children at the police headquarters, expressed their joy over the police action that led to the rescue of the children.

Glory Onyia, the mother of one of the rescued children disclosed that her child disappeared five months ago, adding that the family is in pain.

Onyia said: “My child went missing on April 22. He is an eight-year-old boy. I moved from church to church. I even went to Okporo Police Station to file a report.

“I went out, and when I returned I did not see my child till night; I looked all around for him.

“I’m very happy. He was very happy when he saw me, my mom screamed and everyone in our compound screamed when the police brought him in.”

Nkechinyere Harry also said: “My daughter is Queen Harry, she is nine. She was abducted at Miles One near Ojukwu Field.

“I sent her to go to the market where they sell bole. I usually sent her there to get yam skins for our goats.

“I sent her older sister and she went with her. When they got there, a man sent her elder on an errand.

“When she came back, Queen was missing. She returned home but couldn’t find her.”
