Louise breathed her last on Friday, September 23 at her home in Montdurausse, France.

Her agent David Shaul announced the actress’ death to Deadline and Rolling Stone, revealing that she died in her sleep. At the time of writing, the cause of her death has not been revealed.

Louise built the house out of a 300-year-old farmhouse, and according to Deadline, the actress told her family today: “I can’t believe I’ve created something so meaningful to my well-being.”

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, the American actress began her career in the 1950s appearing in television shows such as Legislator (1958), Maverick (1959) and the original Untouchable series.

In 1975, Louise gained worldwide recognition for her Academy Award-winning role as Nurse Ratched. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which also starred Jack Nicholson. Louise, who was born to deaf parents, used sign language to deliver her speech during her iconic Oscar acceptance speech.

Louise also won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Nurse Ratched. Her character also inspired Ratched, a remake of her show starring Sarah Paulson.

Her other iconic film roles came Brainstorm (1983), 2 days in the valley (1996), An incendiary (1984) and Flowers in the attic (1987) among others.

She also played a recurring role Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Kai Winn Adami, a Bajoran religious leader.

Despite her huge professional success, Louise kept her personal life out of the limelight.

She married film producer Jerry Bick in 1959, just as her television career was taking off. The couple were together for 19 years until divorcing in 1978.

Neither Louise nor Jerry remarried after their divorce. The couple had two sons during their marriage – John Dashiell Bick and Andrew Wilson Bick.
