Is Celeborn dead in The Rings of Power? Galadriel’s husband is MIA

*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for The Rings of Power*

As each new episode of The Rings of Power arrived, the show slowly peeled back the layers surrounding its characters and the various mysteries it set up.

After the explosive finale of episode 6, the latest chapter dealt with the fallout of the Orc plan, with many human (and elven) survivors scattered across the Southlands, which now look much more like the fiery land of Mordor we’re all familiar with.

In the episode, Galadriel connects with Theo as they go to find his mother Bronwyn, and while they’re on the road, their conversation turns to the people they’ve lost throughout their lives.

Galadriel chose this moment to reveal that she had lost her husband Celeborn, a moment that instantly piqued the curiosity of The Rings of Power fans.

The Rings of Power hint at Celeborn’s fate

Worried that his mother died in the fiery eruption of Mount Doom, Theo questions whether Galadriel ever lost someone she was close to.

She explains that her brother Finrod was killed, an event we learned about in episode 1, but then surprisingly also reveals that she also lost her husband Celeborn, even referring to him in the past tense: “His name was Celeborn.”

Describing how she and Celeborn first met, Galadriel says, “We met in a glade full of flowers. I was dancing and he saw me there. War seemed so very far away then. When he did, I scolded him. His armor didn’t fit right. I called him the silver clam. I never saw him again after that.”

Prime Video’s X-ray feature, which provides trivia about movies and TV shows, also says: “Celeborn was related to Thingol Grey-Cak of Doriath, King of the Elves in the First Age. He was last seen marching off to war, from which he never returned – but his exact fate remains unknown.

Is Celeborn dead in The Rings of Power?

No, Celeborn is not dead in The Rings of Power.

Seasoned Lord of the Rings fans will know that Celeborn must be alive when we meet the character during The Fellowship of the Ring, where the surviving members of the fellowship travel through Lothlórien on their way through Moria, which takes place thousands of years after The Fellowship of the Ring. Rings of Power.

It is important to note that Galadriel never explicitly states that Celeborn is dead, only that she last saw him when he left for war.

This obviously begs the questions, ‘What happened to Celeborn and where is he in The Rings of Power?’

This is something the show has yet to reveal, but the best conclusions we can draw from the evidence presented is that Celeborn was either captured by the enemy after the war, or simply was unable to track down Galadriel.

Remember that once the War of Wrath against Morgoth ended, Galadriel spent centuries searching for Sauron in the farthest corners of Middle-earth, never staying in one place long enough to be found.

Perhaps the eventual return of Celeborn will spark a passionate love triangle between him, Galadriel, and Halbrand after Halbrand grew close to Galadriel as Season 1 progressed.

    Fans offer their theories

The unexpected mention of Celeborn in episode 7 sparked quite a reaction from fans, with many taking to social media to offer their thoughts and theories on where he might be.

One fan on Twitter she believes that with Celeborn’s return, Galadriel will find happiness: “Galadriel thinks her husband Celeborn is dead? So will he appear and bring happiness back into her life? OMG, now I’m so curious how they’re going to introduce him and where he’s been all this time.”

While another remarked that Galadriel would likely be a different person if he were still around: “That Celeborn is presumed dead is honestly great. Because a lot of things Galadriel has done don’t make sense if she’s around (and even less if they’ve never met). And I’ll be very interested to see how they bring him back.’

“Celeborn disappeared (and will return), the plot was created to give Sauron and Galadriel a compelling story together in the first season,” he wrote this fan. “It’s a good choice. It works.”

This fan believes that the long-awaited reunion is at hand: “You all know that Celeborn is not really dead. Like somewhere along the line there will be a tearful reunion. I promise this all explains what Galadriel THINKS happened to him.”

And finally, this fan summed up the Celeborn reference with a meme:
