Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to undergo surgery for pacemaker implantation after health crisis

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will have a pacemaker implanted on Sunday morning amid recent health issues, according to Israeli reports.
The surgery was announced in a Twitter video early Sunday morning. The Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) reported that Netanyahu’s statements, which were in Hebrew, were made ahead of a Knesset vote on Israel’s controversial judicial reform.
“Attempts to reach a broad agreement are still continuing today,” he told KAN.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), pacemakers send electrical impulses to the chambers of the heart to regulate the rate and rhythm of heartbeats.

“A week ago I was fitted with a monitoring device. This device beeped tonight and said I needed to have a pacemaker and I had to do it already tonight,” Netanyahu, 73, said in the video. “I feel fine, but I have to listen to my doctors.”

Last week, Netanyahu was discharged from hospital after suffering severe hydration. The Prime Minister received a heart monitor in his chest.
Netanyahu said he was on the shore of the Sea of Galilee without water or sunscreen when he fell ill last weekend. Israel was experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius or 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

“On the recommendation of doctors, the prime minister continues to undergo additional routine tests,” the prime minister’s office previously said in a statement.
Netanyahu has recently come under fire from Israelis for his proposal for judicial reform. On Friday, a group of more than 1,100 Israeli Air Force pilots and crew members said they would suspend their voluntary reserve service if the overhaul materialized.

“Legislation that allows the government to act in such an unreasonable manner would harm the security of the State of Israel, lead to deep mistrust, and jeopardize my ability to continue and risk my life – therefore, with great sadness and with no other option, I suspend my duty of voluntary reserve,” the letter reads.
