Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday urged Nigerian youths to shun politicians who are playing ethnic and religious cards in the 2023 general elections.
Jonathan stated this while speaking at a symposium in Owerri, Imo State to commemorate the 80th birthday of the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
He asked Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious emotions when they vote for the country’s new leaders next year.
The former president lamented that ethnicity and religion are strongly entrenched in Nigerian politics to the detriment of the country.
Fortunately, we are in an election season and therefore I appeal to the youth to take charge of their destiny by voting for those who believe in our togetherness and will promote peace and progress – not those who would create ethnic and religious walls between our people . ” he declared.
“If we work together and tolerate our differences, we can build a nation where everyone has a sense of belonging.” The rights of all would be protected.
“This is the way we must go: a Nigeria where justice and equality reign.
