Leeds or Celtic could’ve got ‘extraordinary’ player, now he costs £50m

During the summer of 2020, former Spain international Juanma Lopez was asked to name two future stars he believed could go far in the European game. One of them was Dani Olmo, the RB Leipzig playmaker who is now following in Lopez’s footsteps for the Spanish national team. The second well is not as well established after two years.

Well, not yet.

“I know him well,” Lopez told Gianluca di Marzio. “(Majer) is an extraordinary talent who can go very far. Its growth is constant. He will become one of the best in Europe in his position, you will see.”

With Lopez done with life as an agent, maybe there’s a future for him in scouting. Because while Dani Olmo is almost certain to be included in Spain’s World Cup squad should he return from injury, Lovro Majer is a name you’ll be hearing much more regularly in 2023.

Could Lovro Majer be joining Barcelona, Atletico Madrid or PSG soon?

Per FootMercato, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain made inquiries over the summer about the so-called “new Luka Modric”. Atlético Madrid too. And the 2021 La Liga champions have no intention of relinquishing their interest in a player who shares Modric’s ability, guile and ability to split defences, while adding a truly ruthless streak to his name.

Majer produced 11 goals and 13 assists for his current employer, Rennes, in the 2021/22 season. Convincing Rennes to cash in would now require an offer in the region of £50m. That’s quite a profit margin when you consider that Majer joined for £10m from Dinamo Zagreb only last year.

Leeds United were reportedly monitoring Majer before swapping the Croatian capital for Roahzon Park. Celtic, meanwhile, were well ahead, sending scouts to track the teenage Majer all the way back in 2018 when he was valued at just £1.5m by Hajduk Split.

He has come a long way since then.

“Everything is fine at this point,” Majer told SoFoot a few months ago. “I think I’m in a good place. But I know I can still improve in several areas. For example, I know I still need to improve my header game, even though I have scored three goals with headers this season.

“I know that there are several things written about my future. But I’m happy in Rennes.”

However, imagine how much happier Majer could be in Madrid, Barcelona or Paris with silverware and Champions League football to showcase his talent.
