Martin Keown delivers verdict on Gianluca Scamacca that West Ham fans will love

Gianluca Scamacca came off the bench to score an important goal as West Ham beat Anderlecht 1-0 in Belgium on Thursday night – and Martin Keown applauded the West Ham striker with a short 11-word verdict on BT Sport.

Scamacca, 23, was on the bench for West Ham’s Conference League game on Thursday night. But with the score reading 0-0 in the 70th minute and Michail Antonio unable to find a breakthrough, David Moyes decided to make a change.

The Italy international was one of three substitutes made with 20 minutes to play. He also brought in Declan Rice and Lucas Paquet. That made the difference. Rice offers more in midfield and Paqueta provides an assist for Scamacca.

Perfectly balanced pass to Scamacca. But the Italian struck the winner, a beautiful touch and a striker’s finish with plenty of confidence. Keown said, “It’s going to another level, Scamacca.” It has quality.”

Keown applauded West Ham striker Scamac for the winner

Fresh from opening his Premier League account with a fine half-volley against Wolves, Scamacca continued his form in Europe as well. He now has 11 appearances for West Ham, of which only six starts, he has five goals.

It’s a great start to his Hammers career. Score a lot of goals, but also show different goals. Capable of shooting from outside the box but also providing that predatory instinct in the box – with headers or feet.

He looks like a real all-round striker and the Hammers have done well. With Antonio being injury-prone and turning 33 next March, Scamacca is showing he can be a long-term answer. He will probably start this weekend.

West Ham take on London rivals Fulham at the London Stadium and after the Cottagers shipped four to Newcastle, you’d think that gives Scamacco a decent chance of getting his second Premier League goal.
