‘Massive’: Free-agent says Newcastle wanted him before Howe U-turn

Former Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster has admitted on his official Instagram account that Newcastle United offered him a way back to the Premier League before Eddie Howe decided on Loris Karius.

If reports are to be believed, Howe chose Karius ahead of Foster when given the option between the two free agent goalscorers following Karl Darlow’s (Northern Echo) ankle injury. An ankle injury that should keep the Newcastle number two out until the New Year.

Karius, who has agreed the shortest of short-term deals that will initially keep him at St James’ Park for just a few months, comes more than four years after his last appearance for the English club; which a German would prefer to forget those Goals from Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale in Real Madrid’s 3-1 Champions League final victory over Liverpool in 2018 still haunt the dreams of many on Merseyside.

Newcastle clearly feel that Karius, a decade younger than Foster, still has a lot to offer. Meanwhile, he is looking for a new home after Watford’s relegation in May.

Newcastle United have chosen Lorius Karius over Ben Foster

“More than a week ago, I’m sitting at home (and) the phone rings; “Fozzy, listen, I know a team that wants to sign you. It’s good to go. They want to sign you. It’s Newcastle,” Foster explains.

“I went; ‘Oh my god, that’s massive.’ I thought if they’re going to pay me a really good wage, it’s something I have to (consider).

The former “YouTube phenomenon turned Manchester United goalkeeper” adds that he was even “offered a contract” by Newcastle. That was before Howe threw his weight behind the younger option. It gives Karius the chance to revive a career that has seriously stalled since his mistake-filled spell at Anfield.

“We are delighted to add Loris to our goalkeeping group,” Howe says of Karius; one of the top scorers in the Bundesliga during his time at Mainz until Liverpool came calling.

“He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience. And it will provide competition and support during an important part of the season.”
