New York shelter says Ralphie the dog is stupid, but still wants to adopt him: NPR
A New York animal shelter tells potential adopters everything they need to know about a particular dog — the good and the bad, but mostly the bad.
The Niagara SPCA said it has been very good at changing the animal’s “undesirable” traits, but doing so with Ralphie the dog was difficult, he said last week.
“However, it confuses us. We don’t really have too many nice things to say, so we’re going to say it.”
Ralphie the dog is cute but tries to say no to him and tends to bite his ankles, the organization said.
“Our best guess is that Ralphie’s cute face gave him all he wanted and boundaries are what he heard, but they didn’t apply to him,” the report said.
Ralphie was adopted and rehomed twice. At first, his owners took him to boarding and training sessions, but the animal insisted on being the boss of everything, the SPCA said in a statement. The second time, her new owners said she was annoying their big dogs and rehomed her after two weeks.
“What they really mean is Ralphie is a fire-breathing demon and will eat our dog, but he’s only 26 pounds,” said the Niagara SPCA.
“A lot of people have glossed over Ralphie’s negatives, but we’re going to tell you all about it,” he said. “He’s a jerk, not even half of it. Everything belongs to him. If you dare to challenge his ability to own things, he will be angry. If you show a moment of weakness, be ready to take advantage of it. It looks interesting, right?
The shelter said the best home for Ralphie is a “mother of dragons” or a home where the owner is strict and has no other animals.
To inquire about adopting Ralphie, call (716) 731-4368 and extension 301. Ralphie’s former trainer will be available as a resource, the shelter said.
