Oakland music video shoot shot; Killed at the age of 18
An 18-year-old man was killed and four others injured in a shooting on the set of a music video in Oakland, Calif., Monday night, police said.
The incident comes after a week of mass shootings in California that killed nearly two dozen people.
It was reported just after 6 p.m. on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, where police were alerted by the ShotSpotter program to gunshots.
Police officers found spent shells at the scene, but there were no casualties. However, several gunshot wounds were reported at Oakland-area hospitals shortly thereafter.
One man, identified as 18-year-old Mario Navarro, died of his injuries on Tuesday.
According to Oakland police, 40-50 people were filming the video on MacArthur Blvd.
Oakland Police Chief Darren Ellison said at a news conference Tuesday that “several shooters were fired from multiple directions at the time of the recording.”
A total of five people, including Navarro, opened fire, Ellison said. Three more people who tried to flee the scene were injured in the accident.
The shooting victims are between 15 and 63 years old.
A nearby business was hit, Allison said.
“We are investigating the possibility that a criminal group or gang was involved in this incident,” Ellison said.
“We have a good idea of the parties involved in terms of groups and gangs,” the police chief said. “We’re not ready to release it now.”
Ellison called mass shootings a “sad trend,” citing the shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay.
“Last night, that trend unfortunately hit close to home,” he said.
