Outscoring Scamacca; Striker has 6 goals in 6 games since West Ham link

Salt, meet the wounds. As David Moyes proposed his candidate for the ‘Most Convincing Fake Laugh of the Year’ award, West Ham United predecessor Manuel Pellegrini had every reason to smile.

His Real Betis side came from behind to beat Girona on Sunday afternoon to maintain a three-point gap on themselves and La Liga leaders Real Madrid. And there was no surprise as to the identity of the man who turned a potentially damaging 1-0 defeat into a hard-fought 2-1 win.

Borja Iglesias scored a respectable 10 goals in Spain’s top flight last season. However, with six out of six this term, he is more than halfway to surpassing that number. In fact, this is Iglesias’ best campaign since scoring 17 times for Espanyol in 2018/19; a season that paved the way for his £26m move to the Estadio Benito Villamarin.

West Ham were interested in Iglesias after his breakthrough season in the top flight. According to AS, they interviewed again in May. Presumably in the hope that Real Betis’ precarious financial situation will force them to sell. However, the Hammers turned to Gianluca Scamacca instead and Pellegrini will be counting their lucky stars that they got it.

West Ham United have made inquiries about Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias

“I’m very happy for him because he deserved it,” says Pellegrini; late bloomer Iglesias was rewarded with a first-ever call-up to the Spanish national team ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

“He worked a lot, especially with his back to goal. He’s always been a shooter.”

“It’s unbelievable,” Iglesias tells ESPN; to discuss his transformation from semi-reliable centre-forward to one of the most feared goalscorers in Spanish football.

“Sometimes when you sit and think about it too much, it makes you a little dizzy.”

With a World Cup place within reach and Champions League football at Real Betis a very real possibility, Iglesias is unlikely to look at Scamacco on the West Ham bench and wish it was him.
