Phillies tight end Taijuan Walker is out early and will be evaluated

One of the Phillies’ big offseason free agent additions, Taijuan Walker, was ruled out of Wednesday’s win over the Mariners because of right wrist tightness.

He was promoted after surrendering a pair of homers, five runs on five hits and a walk in just four innings. He threw 68 pitches and struck out six.

Walker will come under further scrutiny Thursday as Phillies slams Philadelphia Inquirer tweet writer Scott Lauber. He manager Rob Thomson said the early exit was “precautionary” and the team were not concerned.

That’s not good news for the Phillies, who have struggled to get deep into the game in the first month of the season. Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler haven’t been above the rotation of pitchers thus far. Ranger Suarez is still out as he works his way back from a sprained left elbow, and Walker could now go on the injured list.

As for Suarez, he will begin minor league rehab on Thursday and could make his season debut in mid-May. Thomson said Suarez will make three minor league rehab starts before joining the rotation.

Lucky for the team, as our friend Bob Wankel of Crossing Broad points out, the bullpen has played well recently.

The Phillies’ bullpen has allowed just two runs over 32 innings and has been dominant since April 16.

Let’s hope the news about Walker is good. The team brought him in to add depth to the rotation, and he had pitched well in the four games he started with a 2-1 record and 3.80 ERA before Wednesday’s outing.
