Provides Rainsville City School District

DeKalb County, AL. (WHNT) – A new school system could be coming to a town in DeKalb County.
The city of Rainsville plans to build its own school system as DeKalb County continues to grow.
Talk of a Rainsville city school system isn’t new, but the idea has resurfaced recently as the county has experienced tremendous growth.
Rainsville’s population is now more than 5,500, but students who live there attend schools in the DeKalb County School District, according to Rainsville Mayor Roger Lingerfelt.
Lingerfelt said the city needs money to have a municipal school.
“One thing, the seed money should be about three million dollars, between two and a half to three million dollars,” he said. “These are start-up costs to help get you through the first year. It doesn’t depend on the city.
His parents told him that the idea of a municipal school in Rainsville was a convenient one.
“I think it would be great,” the Rainsville mother said. “My kids are moving from Sylvania to Rainsville and I think it would be great to be a city school. He is used to a city school because we live in the city, so it would be nice to be on a city bus.
If the new system was put in place to support it, Rainsville residents would have to agree to pay nearly double their property taxes to fund the new education system.
“Property taxes, I’m not saying we should raise it, I’m saying it’s something you should do,” Lingerfelt said. “We’ve got 10 million in property taxes, ten and a half million in property taxes, you’ve got to be really close to saying twenty, twenty-five to thirty million in taxes, and that’s just the city limits of Rainsville.”
At the moment, the mayor says it’s all just talk. Lingerfelt said the city will review those ideas with the DeKalb County School Board and talk to residents about their needs. If Rainsville residents are interested in learning more about the study conducted by Criterion K-12 Consulting, they can find that information on the City of Rainsville website.
