Rent A Girlfriend season 3 confirmed, anime has plenty of manga left to adapt

Ahead of the S2 finale, fans around the world are delighted to hear that the Rent A Girlfriend anime adaptation has been renewed for Season 3.

Summer anime 2022 will forever be remembered as a season of returning fan favorites.

One such show that made its much-anticipated return in July was Rent A Girlfriend, TMS Entertainment’s adaptation of Reiji Miyajima’s popular manga series.

Unfortunately, we’re now nearing the end of summer anime 2022, with Rent A Girlfriend ending its second telecast today.

The good news is that Rent A Girlfriend season 3 was officially announced just a few hours ago – here’s everything you need to know.

Rent A Girlfriend Season 3 Confirmed Ahead of S2 Finale

As previously mentioned, Rent A Girlfriend Season 3 was publicly announced today for TMS Entertainment, the animation studio behind the anime adaptation.

The announcement was made via the official Japanese site along with a special trailer on YouTube, see the end of this section.

“The production of the third season of the TV anime has been decided! Special Message Video” is now live! The second season of the TV anime “Kanojo, Oyasama” has finally reached its final episode. The decision to produce a third season of the TV anime was announced after the final telecast at midnight on Friday, September 16th!” – via Kanokari-official.

The announcement also stated that “the four people who signed the script this time are Amamiya Ten (Chizuru), Yuuki Aoi (Asami), Higashiyama Nao (Ruka), and Takahashi Riie (Sumi).

While the renewal is welcome, not many fans will be too surprised by news of the production decision. This was because there is plenty of source material from the original manga series that can be adapted for television; often a deciding factor in modern anime revivals. According to Anime Geek, Season 12 Episode 2 is expected to end with an adaptation of Volume 12, Chapter 103 of Reiji Miyajima’s manga series.

The good news for fans is that on the 28thThursday The manga volume, which contains a total of 246 chapters, was released domestically in Japan on September 16Thursday – on the same day as the season 2 anime finale. This means that if TMS Entertainment develops the entire manga series, there will potentially be enough source material for up to five TV anime adaptations!

Prior to the announcement, there was concern that the anime might not be popular enough to merit a third television season. As noted by Anime Geek, season 2 of the anime failed to significantly boost manga sales, a common feature of series that never return to television.

Internationally, the Rent A Girlfriend anime has seen a significant drop in popularity since its first season. In fact, the series only managed to maintain a disappointing 6.52/10 on MyAnimeList, 65% on Anilist, and 3.6/5 on Anime Planet – all down from its 2020 debut season.

This sentiment is reflected in the current top rated review on MyAnimeList, which reads: “I wouldn’t recommend watching the second season because nothing has changed yet and I guarantee it won’t, so if you’ve already watched the first season find something worth paying attention to time.”

“Overall, a pretty bad anime. I have no real expectations that the story will ever be good. I’m watching it 1.5x because I think the girl’s story and her enthusiasm for her passion is interesting. I’d rather see her journey to becoming an actress than this romance and 3 other side romances. If that tells you anything about how badly written the story is. You can throw it away if it becomes too unbearable or cramping.” – User review via MAL.

When could season 3 come out?

While Rent A Girlfriend season 3 has officially been renewed, unfortunately there is no public information on the planned release window; however, we can make some predictions based on the S1-2 production cycles.

The anime was first announced in December 2019 and debuted in July 2020. Season 2 was then actually renewed a few weeks before the Season 1 finale in September 2020 – proving just how popular the debut airing was around the world.

However, TMS Entertainment is already set to produce Dr Stone Season 3 and Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles Season 2 in 2023. This will most likely push Rent A Girlfriend down the priority list as we head into the new year.

Based on TMS Entertainment’s current schedule and the typical delay after a renewal announcement, fans could see Rent A Girlfriend return with Season 3 in either October 2023 or January 2024.
