The Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC) has filed a lawsuit against the revocation of its license by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), saying KSMC has settled its debt of N22.4 million from 2013 to 2020 to the Federal Government.
The Managing Director of KSMC, Ibrahim Samaila Ahmed, told Daily Trust on Friday that the corporation is in the process of paying its 2021 to 2022 bills to the Federal Government and should not have been included in the list of broadcasters in debt to the government.
“I believe that NBC is being deceptive by including KSMC on the list of broadcast licenses they claim to have taken away. What does that make me say? Honorable Madam Minister of Information has only recently given a discount to broadcasters in 2020, saying that instead of paying 100%, broadcasters can pay 40%. KSČM took advantage of this and paid from 2013 to 2020. According to him, KSČM paid N22.4 million.
“I’m shocked that NBC still lists KSMC on their list of debtors because at one point (NBC) was using KSMC as an example of a station that paid off its debt. I find it dishonest of them to publish or even publicize KSMC’s inclusion on this list.
The MD criticized the commission for threatening broadcasting stations with license withdrawal at a time when national security is at an all-time high. The MD emphasized that the broadcasting stations are helping to calm the tension in the country.
“Kaduna State has a responsible government,” he asserted, “and part of that responsibility was to deal from 2013 to 2020. As I speak, the process is on track for payments for 2021 and 2022 and it is already with planning and budgeting. Ministry. I have no doubt that they are simply waiting for cash funds.
