Sandbox Alerts of Security Breach Community warns users against interacting with suspicious emails: all the details

The Sandbox, a popular metaverse company, has alerted its community members to a security breach. According to a recent blog post, the platform has discovered that an unauthorized third party may have bypassed its security measures and collected information about its users. The Sandbox community is cautioned against interacting with any suspicious emails that could allow attackers to access and steal their digital assets. The incident marks the first major breach reported by the Web3 industry in 2023.
A malicious email reaching the inboxes of The Sandbox community members is titled “The Sandbox Game (PURELAND) Access”. The mail contains links to malicious programs that can be secretly installed on the hardware of unsuspecting users and gain access to their information.
“An unauthorized third party accessed the computer of an employee of The Sandbox. This allowed a third party to gain access to multiple email addresses that they then emailed,” the official blog post said.
Gaming ecosystem provider Web3 discovered the flaw late last month. It is currently contacting users who received the malicious phishing email. These individuals have been instructed not to open, play or download any links received in the email.
“We locked down employee accounts and Sandbox access, reformatted the employee’s laptop and reset all associated passwords, including requiring two-factor authentication. We did not identify any other effects. However, we are working to control the situation,” the blog added.
The Sandbox community has instructed its members to run a reliable antivirus as well as reformat affected systems. Hong Kong-based game software company Animoca Brands acquired a mobile game company called The Sandbox in 2018. Animoca then updated the platform by spinning the metaverse.
Lately, the Sandbox metaverse has become a hot spot for several brands looking to establish themselves in the metaverse. Last June, New York’s famous Times Square announced its Metaverse address.
Standard Chartered Bank, Dubai’s virtual asset regulator, Mastercard and HSBC Bank have also created their own virtual spaces in The Sandbox metaverse.
After its success, Animoca decided to invest more in the sector and participate in the expansion and adoption of metaverse technology. In December, Animoca Brands revealed plans to launch a $2 billion (roughly Rs. 16,260 crore) mega-fund for the metaverse business.
