Spain needs to recruit 200,000 engineers over the next 10 years

Engineers are needed. In Spain there are currently a total of 750,000 engineers, although the sector will need to incorporate 200,000 more of these professionals for the next ten years to face the projects that the country requires.

This is clear from the first Engineering Observatory of Spain (OIE), which claims the role of engineering in the economy and the potential of women in the sector, taking into account that they still represent only 20% of the total. However, this proportion is at the same levels as those of the large economies of the European Union such as France (22%), Italy (18%) or Germany (17%), although the OIE considers that it is a situation to be reversed, having to motivate more female talent towards the profession.

By branches of engineering, the presence of women is distributed in 34% in the field of agricultural/agronomic engineering, 24% in roads, 19% in industrial, 16% in computing12% in telecommunications and 24% in other engineering.

Lack of engineers in Spain

Of the total group of engineers, 65% have completed training as technical engineers or engineering graduates, and 35% are engineers or have a master’s degree in engineering. 40% are 35 years of age or younger and 31% of them have international professional relationships in their daily lives.

As for remuneration, the sector earns around 30% more than the country’s average, although stagnation has been detected in recent decades, as well as a wage gap between male and female engineers of the order of 10%.

The employment figure is 98% in the profession, in contrast to the 13% unemployment rate in Spain. In this sense, 86% of the companies consulted in the study (more than 500) declare that they will need to hire more engineers in the coming years. Finally, 15% of engineers in Spain are businessmen or freely exercise their profession and 59% of salaried engineers work in companies with more than 250 workers.
