The storm leaves thousands in the dark

Tens of thousands of homes were without power in California on Friday as torrential rain and strong winds lashed the state.
Power companies such as Pacific Gas and Electric Co and Southern California Edison were bracing for additional outages next week as more rain and storms hit.
“We have little time to make as much progress as possible before the next weather system in the series of storms enters our service area over the weekend,” said Yanisse Quinones, vice president. PG&E Senior Electric Operations, in renewal. As of 3 p.m. Thursday, PG&E had about 2,300 outages affecting 95,500 customers.

Another atmospheric flurry will hit northern California late Friday and spread into central California on Saturday, the National Weather Service said. (Atmospheric rivers that direct warm tropical air into precipitation cause increased precipitation.)
According to the National Weather Service, continued heavy rain on New Year’s Eve and Wednesday after other heavy storms could cause flash flooding and mudslides.
Heavy rain and strong winds that will continue into Tuesday could cause additional power outages as a “severe atmospheric river” hits the state on Monday, the NWS said.

Saturated ground and the potential for strong winds could bring down trees, increasing the likelihood of widespread power outages, AccuWeather said.
