Here’s everything we know about Thuniv so far, including why the release might conflict with 2023’s Varisu and, of course, the all-important first-look movie poster.

What is Thunivu, or AK 61?

Thunivu is directed by H Vinoth (Valimai, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru), produced by Boney Kapoor (Wanted, Vaimai) and Zee Studios, centered around the iconic Ajith Kumar in the lead role.

Alongside Kumar, the film will star Manju Warrier, John Kokken, Ajay, Samuthirakani, Kavin and Cibi Chandran – though their specific roles remain TBA.

21st of SeptemberHolythe first look at the movie poster for Thuniva was shared online, see below, titled “No Guts, No Glory”.

The film is touted to be a bank heist thriller, with Pinkvilla noting, “While Ajith Kumar will star in his next college professor, he will be accompanied by Manju Warrier as the female lead.

The shooting of the film began earlier this year in Hyderabad and Chennai before moving to Pune for the second schedule. According to The Times of India, the production team has planned to start the next phase of shooting in Bangkok soon.

“H Vinoth and his crew will leave for Bangkok in the first week of September to begin preparations for what promises to be an intensive action plan. The yet-to-be-titled heist thriller has a 21-day shoot in Bangkok and is expected to begin from mid-September. Ajith Kumar and the entire team will leave for Bangkok around September 15 for this marathon shooting leg. Some of the action scenes will be shot by AK and the gang in Bangkok.” – Pinkvilla.

Thuniv’s release could clash with Varusi, the report says

Unfortunately, the production crew and the associated distribution partners have not yet revealed the planned release date of Thunivu.

However, there was already a fear that the release date might clash with the highly anticipated film ‘Varisu’.

As noted by The Times of India, the production team is eyeing a holiday release for the upcoming film Thunivu.

Sadly, with Diwali 2022 and December 2022 schedules already on the horizon, “the makers have no option but to move the film to January. [2023].”

“So there are possibilities of ‘Ajith 61’ [AK 61 – now Thunivu] to release for Pongal 2023 and this will see Ajith face Vijay at the box office as his ‘Varisu’ is locked for a festival release. Fans Excited About ‘AK 61’ Inside News [Thunivu] release, if things fall into place, Ajith and Vijay are expected to clash at the box office after 8 years.” – The Times of India.

Other public holidays around this reported period include Republic Day in late January, Rama Navami in late March and Ambedkar Jayanti in mid-April.

This article will be updated as more information about Thunivu’s film is revealed, with more trailers and posters expected to be released online in the coming weeks.
