Veteran actress Leelavathi passes away

Leelavathi, well-known Kannada actress with a remarkable career spanning over 600 movies, passed away on Friday at the age of 85. The veteran actress had been battling illness and confined to her bed for a while before her demise at a hospital in Nelamangala.

Her cinematic journey began with the movie Nagakannike, marking the inception of a prolific career that left an indelible mark on the Kannada film industry. Leelavathi’s legacy extends beyond the silver screen; she was recognised for her philanthropic endeavours.

Notably, she played a pivotal role in the establishment of a primary health center in Nelamangala taluk and was on the brink of realising a dream with the setup of a veterinary clinic.

In the twilight of her life, Leelavathi found solace and purpose in the embrace of agriculture, residing on a farmhouse with her son Vinod Raj, who is also a notable actor. Her dedication to social causes and contributions to various fields make her a revered figure, leaving behind a rich legacy that transcends her cinematic achievements.

Mourning Leelavathi’s death, Siddaramaiah said the news of her passing is ‘painful’.

Former Prime Minister H Deve Gowda, former chief ministers BS Yediyurappa and HD Kumaraswamy too condoled the demise of Leelavathi.
