Recap: Laena’s funeral in episode 7

The seventh episode of House of the Dragon begins on a somber note as the Targaryen royal family gathers for the funeral of Laena Velaryon, daughter of Corlys and Rhaenys and Daemon’s wife.

In a somber opening scene, Vaemond Velaryon is seen giving a eulogy as Laena’s coffin is lowered into the sea.

After the funeral itself, there is a wake that is wracked with tension as the grudge between Rhaenyra’s family and Alicentina has almost reached breaking point.

Why is Daemon laughing at Laena’s funeral?

Daemon laughs during Laena’s funeral, seeing Vaemond’s praise as hypocritical and demeaning to Rhaenyra’s children.

“Salt runs through Velaryon blood,” Vaemond says, looking at Rhaenyra and her children. “Ours is thick. Ours is true. And ours must never lose weight.”

The eulogy basically tells us that the Velaryons are extremely proud of their glorious history and that their bloodline is and must remain pure.

However, Daemon finds this remark hypocritical and soft on Rhaenyra, as her children, despite being named Velaryron, are bastards fathered by Ser Harwin Strong – a rumor that nearly everyone present believes to be true.

So while Vaemond tries to present the Velaryons as a noble and pure breadwinner, there’s this huge controversy behind the parentage of Rhaenyra’s children.

Fallout from a funeral

Laena’s funeral in episode 7 proves to be a pivotal moment in House of the Dragon as it sets up events that completely change the show’s setting.

Not only does Aemond Targaryen gain the dragon by claiming Vhagar, but he also loses an eye fighting Rhaenyra’s children, Jacaerys and Lucerys.

Later in the episode, Rhaenyra and Daemon marry to help solidify their position through marriage after the pair arrange for Rhaenyra’s current husband, Laenor Velaryon, to fake his death and disappear.

All of this helps define the battle lines that slowly formed between Rhaenyra and Alicent as the episodes progressed.
