Orcs avoid sunlight in The Rings of Power

After episode 2 teased the goblins’ first appearance, The Rings of Power chapters three and four showcased the vile and ruined creatures in all their glory.

The orcs secretly dug a network of tunnels and ditches across the Southlands to move about without being detected, as well as to avoid sunlight.

In episode 3, we see Arondir and his elves use the sun to their advantage as they attempt to escape, dropping the roof of the moat to shine down on the goblins, most of whom are wearing helmets and hoods to shield them from the glare. sun.

While in episode 4, Arondir, Bronwyn and Theo manage to escape a number of pursuing goblins by reaching a sunny clearing in the forest, with the goblins refusing to leave the shady cover of the trees.

Why do orcs hate sunlight in The Rings of Power?

Orcs hate sunlight in The Rings of Power because they were created before Middle-earth had a sun, meaning they are creatures used to living in darkness.

In the early days of Middle-earth, there was no sun in the sky, instead the land was lit by the Two Lamps and later the Two Trees of Valinor, though both were destroyed by the Dark Lord Morgoth in his attempt to plunge the world into eternal darkness.

At the time Morgoth bred the orcs to serve as his pawns, the only source of light in the world was the Two Trees in the Undying Lands of Valinor, which meant that the Orc creations of Middle-earth lived in a land of total darkness and shadow.

As a result, they have become accustomed to the dark and are therefore not meant to live in sunlight, which is why we see them hiding from the sun in The Rings of Power.

Do orcs die in the sun?

No, while Orcs aren’t fans of daylight, they don’t die in the sun like vampires do.

Instead, goblins are more sensitive to the light and heat of the sun, meaning they will quickly burn or be blinded by its light.

A good analogy for Orcs not liking sunlight would be to lock yourself in a darkened room for a few days and then come out when the sun is at its brightest – that’s right, Orcs are basically teenagers.

Only goblins have spent their entire lives in darkened caves or underground tunnels, so they have an even greater aversion to the sun.
