Why does Ben call Devi “David” in Never Have I Ever?

Since the beginning of Never Have I Ever in 2020, the main character Devi Vishwakumar has a very complicated relationship with classmate Ben Gross.

They started the series as sworn enemies and academic rivals, but in Season 2 they dated for a while, and even though Devi was in a relationship with Paxton Hall-Yoshida at the start of Season 3, Ben still secretly has feelings for her.

Fans are split on whether Devi would work better with Ben or Paxton, and one of the things that counts for/against Ben — depending on your point of view — is that he calls Devi by the name “David.”

It’s a trope that started in season 1 and still remains in season 3, but why exactly does Ben call Devi “David” in Never Have I Ever?

Devi and Ben’s relationship in Never Have I Ever

Devi and Ben are introduced in Never Have I Ever as fierce academic rivals who always try to outdo each other in class.

Their constant rivalry has been going on since they were both children and has led to them becoming quite hostile towards each other over the years.

However, at the end of season 1, Ben and Devi’s animosity dies down somewhat when Ben offers to drive Devi all the way to Malibu so she can be with her family when they spread the ashes of her father, Mohan.

Season 1 ends with the pair kissing after Ben drove all the way and waited to make sure Devi was okay.

They start dating briefly in season 2, but Devi fails to mention that she is also starting to see Paxton Hall-Yoshida’s dreamship at the same time, and when this fact is revealed, both boys break up with her.

At the end of season 2, Devi and Paxton get back together, but it is hinted that Ben may still have a thing for her after he lashes out when he sees the pair kissing.
