‘Zero assists’: Paul Merson makes international claim about West Ham & Man United duo

Paul Merson and Clinton Morrison discuss Gareth Southgate’s England squad, including the selection of West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen and calls for Jadon Sancho to leave Manchester United.

Another rejuvenated Manchester United player in Marcus Rashford was also left out of the latest squad ahead of the 2022 World Cup, but that could also be down to his recent injury.

Either way, Sancho’s form last season resulted in him staying at home during the international break despite previously being a regular.

While someone like Bowen, who scored 12 goals and provided 12 assists last season, has yet to go missing in the Premier League this term.

This has sparked a huge debate over whether it was right to leave Sancho out, compounded by the fact that Jack Grealish is also struggling, despite his first goal of the campaign against Wolves at the weekend.

Merson was at pains to point out that yes, Sancho is in “better form” from last campaign, but he has “zero assists” in the Premier League this season.

That’s according to former Crystal Palace striker Morrison, who thinks the ex-Dortmund star “should make the team” instead of Bowen, as he told Sky Sports News.

“Sancho is in better form than last season,” Merson said.

But when Merson was informed that Sancho was to be in the platoon, he replied with the question: “Instead of whom? He scored two goals and has zero assists.”

Morrison then told him: “I think he (Sancho) should have made the team. Of course Jack Grealish scored (against Wolves).

“One player in particular, and I think he’s a fantastic player. But Jarrod Bowen isn’t in spectacular form at the moment, so could you have another look at Jadon Sancho?

“At the end of the day, Bowen is a very good player and he deserves it. It’s difficult because you have a lot of good attacking players.”

MIXED BAG FROM SOUTHGATE

In some respects Southgate is not picking out of form players as the likes of Bowen, Mason Mount, Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire to name a few are still being called up.

But on the other hand, Ivan Toney is being rewarded for his strong start in Brentford colours.

Either way, Southgate’s call to select a number of out-of-form players could also be seen as loyalty to them, which is to be commended.

But at the end of the day, those on the outside can legitimately question his appeals and it will either go straight to the finals or an early knockout for the Three Lions in Qatar.
